Oscillating Method

Intensive shaking powered by the kinetic energy of the tides

The SKRYNAV oscillating method amplifies natural tumbling thanks to a float attached to the patented cylindrical bag. The kinetic energy of the tides and wind makes the bag oscillate on its axis: the oysters undergo intensive shaking that toughens the shell, develops the adductor muscle and produces dense nacre. With SKRYNAV innovation, you produce a high-value spéciale-grade oyster, built to withstand long-haul transport.

When should you use the oscillating method?

The oscillating method meets the need to move upmarket that more and more oyster farmers are pursuing.

In premium and export markets, oyster quality is judged on precise criteria: meat yield, shell strength, shelf life out of water and nacre. Professional buyers — Michelin-starred restaurants, importers, wholesalers — pay more for an oyster that delivers on its promise after 48 to 72 hours in transit.

The intensive shaking of the oscillating method pushes these indicators beyond what conventional farming achieves. Oscillation constantly works the adductor muscle, strengthening closure and extending freshness after harvest.

Situations where the oscillating method is particularly effective

  • Farmers supplying the premium market : fine-dining restaurants, delicatessens, international export
  • Operations shipping long distances : shelf life out of water is a decisive differentiator
  • Sites exposed to wind or high swell energy : the float harnesses these natural forces instead of suffering them
  • Growers looking to maximise the value of every oyster : meat yield and nacre density translate directly into selling price

How does SKRYNAV oscillating shaking work?

The oscillating system is based on a simple principle: adding a float to the patented cylindrical bag (INPI FR2606484) to amplify the kinetic energy captured with every wave and every turn of the tide.

  • The float amplifies the energy of waves and swell, triggering a wide, continuous oscillation with no human intervention
  • The bag oscillates freely on its stainless steel axis (SKNTIGE), suspended between the two bars of the SKRYNAV trestle
  • Switching from circular to oscillating mode takes seconds: simply attach the float to the bag, with no change of structure
  • Zero motors, zero electricity, zero external energy — natural forces only

The growing cycle with the oscillating method

The oscillating method is suited to the stages of the cycle where intensive tumbling creates the most value.

Shaking is particularly effective in spring, during the peak growth period, when oysters benefit from maximum nutrient supply.

Intensive nursery stage (0 to 12 months) : Intensive oscillation guides early growth and evens out sizes from the juvenile stage. Shells take on a compact, regular shape faster than in static culture. BSN4 bag (4 mm mesh), then BSN6 (6 mm mesh).

Premium grow-out (12 to 36 months) : Intensive shaking toughens the shell, develops the adductor muscle and maximises the condition index. The oysters acquire the characteristics of a spéciale: high meat fill, dense nacre and a powerful seal. BSN6 bag (6 mm mesh), then BSN9 (9 mm mesh).

The oscillating method: the results on oyster quality

Whereas conventional baskets work with small volumes and limited tumbling, the SKRYNAV oscillating method delivers active shaking driven by natural forces, in a 36-litre volume per bag. The results are measurable:

  • Round, compact shell : Repeated impacts remove irregular growth, harden the nacre and improve mechanical resistance in transit
  • Powerful adductor muscle : Constant stimulation strengthens the closing muscle, ensuring longer-lasting freshness and superior shelf life out of water
  • Dense, lustrous nacre : Mechanical stimulation strengthens the nacreous layers, the visual signature of a premium oyster sought after by buyers
  • Faster growth : Constant movement reduces biofouling, frees up natural filtration and improves nutrient intake with every tide

Equipment for the oscillating method

The oscillating method uses standard SKRYNAV equipment plus a float that attaches directly to the bag.

The same equipment serves all three methods — a single investment for three growing techniques.

  • TSN6B oyster trestle (6 bags) : the bag oscillates between the trestle bars
  • SKRYNAV Bag : BSN4, BSN6 or BSN9 depending on the growth stage
  • SKNTIGE stainless steel rod (Ø 10 mm) : patented rotation axis, naturally lubricated by seawater
  • Float : Attaches directly to the basket, no additional accessories to buy
  • 316L or 304 marine-grade stainless steel components (EN 10088-3 standard) : longer service life than plastic materials
  • 36-litre volume per bag : optimal capacity for amplified shaking

SKRYNAV : Precision oyster farming

A system designed for every oyster farmer

Other SKRYNAV growing methods

The SKRYNAV trestle supports three methods on the same structure. Farmers switch between them according to the season and their production goals.

Circular Method

Moderate tumbling for uniform batches

Gentle, continuous rotation driven solely by the tides shapes round, regular shells from the juvenile stage onwards. The benchmark method for the nursery phase and for achieving uniform grading.

Flat Method

Traditional hardening, modernised

Emersion cycles concentrate flavour, harden the shell and extend shelf life out of water. The oyster farmer’s time-honoured craft, built into the SKRYNAV system with no compromise.
