SKRYNAV

Precision oyster farming – Disruptive Oyster

Every year in France, 45 million oyster bags are turned by hand. One in two oyster farmers suffers from musculoskeletal disorders. The physical strain deters new recruits and weakens farms that struggle to replace departing workers. At the same time, warming waters are accelerating summer mortality and disrupting growth cycles.

SKRYNAV offers a practical answer to both challenges: a patented oyster-growing system that eliminates manual bag turning by harnessing natural forces — tides, wind and buoyancy. On a single trestle, farmers adapt their growing technique season after season to protect their oysters and reduce the physical workload.

SKRYNAV: an all-in-one oyster-growing system

SKRYNAV is the first European oyster-farming equipment to combine three growing methods on a single trestle — no change of structure, no external energy, no manual turning.

The principle: a patented cylindrical bag, mounted on a stainless steel axis, that harnesses natural forces (tides, swell, wind, buoyancy) to work the oysters automatically. Farmers switch between circular, oscillating and flat modes in seconds, directly on the foreshore.

Three oyster-growing techniques on a single trestle

Why invest in three types of growing structure when a single trestle will do?

Each method meets a specific production need. Farmers choose according to the season, the growth stage and their quality objective.

Circular Method

Shaping the shell from the juvenile stage

In circular mode, the bag rotates on its axis under the action of swell and current. This moderate tumbling guides the oyster’s shape, strengthens the shell and evens out batches with no manual intervention. The result: round, regular oysters and uniform sizes that cut grading time.

  • Ideal for: nursery stage (0–8 months) and grow-out (8–24 months)
  • Key benefit: uniform batches and reduced biofouling

Oscillating Method

Producing a premium oyster

Suspended between the two bars of the trestle, the bag oscillates freely thanks to a float that amplifies the kinetic energy of the tides and wind. This intensive shaking hardens the nacre, develops the adductor muscle and pushes meat yield beyond industry standards. The result: a particularly fleshy spéciale-grade oyster.

  • Ideal for: intensive nursery stage (0–12 months) and premium grow-out (12–36 months)
  • Key benefit: high meat yield and superior shelf life out of water

Flat Method

Modernising traditional hardening

Laid horizontally with a stainless steel retaining bar, the bag reproduces the hardening process (trompage) every oyster farmer knows: emersion cycles concentrate flavour, harden the shell and extend shelf life out of water. Time-honoured craft, built into the SKRYNAV system with no compromise.

  • Ideal for: finishing (from 24 months) and year-round holding
  • Key benefit: concentrated flavour and extended shelf life

Why oyster farming needs to innovate

Raised-trestle culture accounts for 80% of oyster-farming techniques in France.

This model, designed thirty years ago, involves repetitive tasks — turning, grading, transferring between structures — that wear down the body and eat up time. The consequences are measurable:

  • Physical strain: musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect one in two professionals and are the leading cause of sick leave in shellfish farming
  • Recruitment difficulties: labour shortages limit production capacity and hinder farm succession
  • Summer mortality: warming waters weaken spat and juveniles, forcing farmers to adapt their practices faster than ever
  • Uneven batches: irregular turning produces inconsistent sizes that complicate grading and reduce market value

SKRYNAV was developed to address these real-world constraints, in the field, by an oyster farmer who faces these challenges every day.

From spat to premium oyster: the complete cycle with SKRYNAV

With SKRYNAV, a single trestle takes the oyster from grow-out to finishing — from spat to market size — switching technique as the seasons and production goals change:

Circular Method : Nursery stage (0 to 8 months) and grow-out (8 to 24 months): moderate tumbling guides growth, strengthens the shell and produces uniform batches with no additional grading.

Oscillating Method : Intensive nursery stage (0 to 12 months) and premium grow-out (12 to 36 months): intensive shaking sculpts the nacre, develops the adductor muscle and maximises the condition index. The oysters gain market value with every tide.

Flat Method : Hardening and finishing (2 to 8 weeks): emersion cycles concentrate umami flavours, strengthen closure and extend shelf life out of water for shipping and export.

Designed and tested by a Normandy oyster farmer

SKRYNAV was developed by Alexandre Navarre, marine biologist and oyster farmer in Gouville-sur-Mer, Normandy.

This is not a design-office project: every component was designed, prototyped and proven directly on the oyster leases, facing the tides of the Cotentin coast.

Domaine Navarre is a producer of premium live seafood — oysters, European blue lobster, king scallops — recognised by the Collège Culinaire de France and certified PGI Huître de Normandie and MSC sustainable fishing. The same commitment to quality that shapes Navarre oysters guided the design of SKRYNAV.

SKRYNAV innovation is supported by the Normandy Region through AD Normandie’s Impulsion Développement programme — institutional recognition of the project’s relevance to the future of the oyster-farming industry.

SKRYNAV : Precision oyster farming

The climate is changing. So is oyster farming. With SKRYNAV, you no longer endure it : you lead the way in precision oyster farming.

SKRYNAV oyster-farming equipment

Every component is built to last in the marine environment: 316L or 304 marine-grade A4 stainless steel (EN 10088-3 standard), resistant to saltwater corrosion and permanent immersion. A durable investment for years of production.

SKRYNAV oyster trestles

  • TSN8B : 8-bag trestle, steel frame with stainless steel rod and bars, compatible with the circular and flat methods
  • TSN6B : 6-bag trestle, compact format, compatible with all 3 growing methods
  • Leg heights : 70, 80 or 90 cm — straight or splayed legs

SKRYNAV Bags

Three mesh sizes cover the complete cycle, from spat to market size, on the same structure.

  • BSN4 (4 mm mesh) : From spat to nursery stage
  • BSN6 (6 mm mesh) : Intermediate grow-out
  • BSN9 (9 mm mesh) : Grow-out to market size

Stainless steel accessories

  • SKNTIGE : Ø 10 mm stainless steel rod, the patented rotation axis at the heart of the SKRYNAV system
  • Float : For the oscillating method, attaches directly to the basket
  • Hardening bar : Included with every trestle, for switching to flat mode
  • Rubber grommets : Protect the bag and cushion friction
